Chin Says "Unprofessional", "Unacceptable"
Ms. Chin Soo-hee, the nominee for Health and Welfare minister, said in a recent written statement that she will not allow supermarkets to sell over-the-counter (OTC) drugs.
Her choice of words in the statement are "unprofessional" and "unacceptable".
“All drugs should be handled at pharmacies...to help benefit public health...” she said.
Until recently, the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) has sought a revision to the relevant law, paving the way for supermarkets to sell a limited number of OTC remedies, including teeth whitening products and (cigarette) smoking alternatives.
Pharmacists have complained that such a revision measure would hurt themselves, in both "public image" and "profit" points of view.
Chin also said that she will not push for "privatization" of medical service provision, but will look for more ways to improve the status quo.
Still, there are possibilities. She could inject more capitalism in the field.
Chin once led the Youido Institute, a think-tank of the GNP, and she maintains a very close tie with the President Lee.
Possibilities, thus, are potential upcoming of market-driven policies, both new and revised, in welfare and other sectors.
Moreover, according to multiple sources, the MOHW and the Ministry of Strategy and Finance agreed earlier this month to resume talks on the subject of "profit vs non-profit" hospital management.
Currently, foreign "for-profit" hospitals are allowed in free economic zones in Incheon, Busan, and Gwangyang (of Jeolla Province). Several big names have been mentioned, but so far none have taken steps in that direction.
