And The [Claim] Winner Is...
The National Health Insurance Corporation (NHIC) stated in a recent report that the number of patients suffering from hemorrhoid was surpassing a count of 200,000 in 2009.
The exact number was 214,100. The 2009 NHI Claim Winner.
Coming very closely in the second place is senile cataract, with 205,095 patients claiming coverage, followed by 183,465 patient claims for various infections, and 139,048 claims for disc disorder.
Meanwhile, senior citizens were accounted for 32.2 percent of healthcare costs covered by the National Health Insurance Corporation in the first half of Year 2010.
Due to the nation's rapidly aging population, the NHIC said, the total provision for senior citizens continues to increase, thus driving up total cost inevitably.
The state-run health insurance agency have spent more than 21.4 trillion won (KRW) to cover healthcare cost in the first six months of the year, a 12.8 percent increase from the same period of last year. Of them, medical cost for those aged 65 or older accounted for 6.9 trillion won.
"Along with the growing number of people who seeks healthcare service, an increase in the cost for elderly people has pushed the total cost up in the first half of the year," said a senior official at the NHIC.
