Heparin NHI Price Hike..UP to 68 Percent
November 1, 2010. Seoul.Ignited by shortage of heparin products due to rising cost of API's (active pharmaceutical ingredients) supplied from overseas, the government plans to increase the insurance-covered drug price by 49 to 68 percent, starting from December.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare [보건복지부] said last week that the rise in import API prices would hike up manufacturing costs, and would ultimately push up the cost burden on patients.
Under the plan, the price of Choong-wae [중외제약] Heparin Sodium Injection 1000 IU will be increased to 4,190 won from 2,811 won per vial.Choong-wae [중외제약] Heparin products currently cover 70% of the domestic market. For other notable heparin products, marketed by Huons [휴온스] and Hanlim Pharma [한림제약], their prices will increase by 60 percent, starting from December.
Heparin is a drug used to prevent blood clots from forming, and is prescribed to patients who have certain medical conditions, or have been undergoing certain medical procedures that increase the chance that clots will form.
